| 1996 Yankees vs Braves - You want baseball heroes -- the '96 Yankees have plenty. No shortage of heroes between the chalk lines. Not to mention a manager who qualifies as a hero in life. "There are so many stories in this clubhouse, I wouldn't know where to begin," pitcher David Cone gushes. So many World Series stories, and so many tabloid columnists to write them floridly. Cone, battling back from a circulation blockage in his right shoulder threatening his life as well as career. Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden -- flotsam and jetsam from the drug nether world. Tino Martinez, who had the temerity to replace Donnie Baseball Mattingly at first base. Cecil Fielder, rescued from the Siberia of Detroit. Wade Boggs, with failing body and perfect eye, exorcising the Red Sox demon of 1986. Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter, two youngsters so blue chip they deserve a parade on Wall Street. Andy Pettitte, the likely Cy Young winner and 1-0 winner of Game 5, overcoming a slump during which he became known as Sigh Young. Bernie Williams emerging as the best baseball player in the world of classical guitar. Jimmy Key, winner of Game 6, battling back from rotator-cuff surgery. Jim Leyritz, a scrap-iron catcher with steel in his postseason bat, banging The Home Run in Game 4. Graeme Lloyd, the Aussie lefthander who was so bad before he became good that Bronx cheers kept him awake nights. Charlie Hayes, a nimble wide-body third baseman who started the season in Pittsburgh. John Wetteland, team weirdo, in-line skater and bulldog closer. |

| 1988 Los Angeles Dodger vs. Oakland A's World Series Video - Wincing in pain with every swing, Gibson battled Eckersley. When the count reached 2-2, Davis stole second. Now, even a single -- just a looper or a broken-bat hit -- would tie the game. And with Gibson almost swinging one-handed as he struggled to put pressure on his bad leg, the Dodgers and their fans could hope for little more. Gibson had considerably more in mind. With the count 3-2, he swung as hard as he could -- grimacing all the while -- and drove the ball into the right-field bleachers. Dodgers 5, Athletics 4. Re-live each and every memorable game, in this World Series Classic matchup. |

| 1979 Pirates vs. Orioles - The family unit was doing quite nicely in 1979, thank you. Particularly as it applied to major-league baseball. Willie Stargell is surrounded by his Pittsburgh 'Family' after the Pirates' Game 7 triumph. The 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates, emphasizing the team concept to the point that they thought of themselves as a baseball family (and even adopted a popular disco record as their theme song), parlayed their togetherness into a World Series championship. And, fittingly enough, a fellow known affectionately as "Pops" was the big man in this family. "Pops" was veteran first baseman Wilver Dornel Stargell, whose fun-loving nature kept things loose in the clubhouse and whose powerful bat kept the opposition loose on the field. At 38, Willie Stargell thumped 32 home runs for Manager Chuck Tanner's Pirates, helping the Bucs to a National League East championship that wasn't nailed down until the final day of the season. Stargell then drilled two homers, drove in six runs and batted .455 in three Championship Series games as Pittsburgh swept the Cincinnati Reds. Next up for the Pirates was a World Series date against the Baltimore Orioles. But no matter how hard team captain Stargell tried to inspire his teammates -- whether it be along the lines of awarding gold stars for superior performances or supplying such notable performances himself -- he saw the National League champions fall dangerously behind the Orioles. | 1959 Dodgers vs. Giants - The Dodgers had come a long way since 1958, from seventh place to the National League pennant. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum hosts its first World Series game, October 4, 1959. The Dodgers also had come a long way since 1957: About 3,000 miles. Times they were a-changing. Major league baseball underwent its first alignment switch in 50 years in 1953 with the transfer of the Boston Braves to Milwaukee, and then saw the St. Louis Browns move to Baltimore in 1954 and the Philadelphia Athletics shift to Kansas City in 1955. But it underwent a blockbuster makeover in 1958 when the New York Giants took up residence in San Francisco and the Brooklyn Dodgers settled into Los Angeles. Los Angeles fans, expectations high for a club that had won four NL pennants in its last six seasons in Brooklyn, received a jolt in '58 when the Dodgers made their West Coast debut by finishing two games from the basement. After a year of adjustment and the infusion of some new faces into a cast that had grown old in Brooklyn, the Dodgers rebounded dramatically in 1959 and captured the franchise's seventh flag in 13 seasons. The Dodgers, losers of two pennant playoffs in Brooklyn, won the '59 NL championship by beating the Milwaukee Braves in two straight games in a best-of-three playoff after the clubs finished in a first-place tie with 86-68 records. With one old postseason jinx disposed of, the Dodgers took aim on another, the World Series. Unable to win the fall classic as a Brooklyn-based team until the club's eighth go-round, the Dodgers went on to win the Series in their first appearance as a representative of Los Angeles. End of jinx No. 2. The 1959 World Series between the Dodgers and the American League champion Chicago White Sox began at Comiskey Park, which hadn't played host to a Series game since the concluding game of the scandal-ridden 1919 affair. The "Go-Go" Sox, featuring a Luis Aparicio-led running attack, excellent defense and top-line pitching. |
